How Homies Was Created
S&R Games was founded by an 11 year old and her dad who love awesome games.
The game came to life over a year and half ago when I came up with the idea for a game about architecture and building awesome homes. After mocking up a ton of cards drawn by hand, we played game after game, trying different approaches to strategy and refining the game play every time.
After much iteration, we were then ready to do a first production run. Artwork was created using Photoshop and other desktop design tools like Firefly to create the cute homie characters and cool looking land and homes.
The first version of Homies was pretty rough and the cards turned out way to big during printing. But, it allowed us to share the game with friends and family to get additional feedback.
Version 2.0 was much more refined and, for this batch, we manufactured ten sets with the printer that we've chosen for the project. Again, this allowed us to test game play and further refine the mix of cards and types of actions used. We tested two, three and four player games. During many late night play sessions we got feedback and observed how someone's strategy evolved after they had played multiple times.
For the final version, we enlarged the box, did much more complete set of directions and improved the game play with Homie cards - each one with their own personality and preference for type of home.
Homies Version 3.0 that you are backing is awesome, fully tuned up, and ready for prime time! We hope you enjoy the strategy and game play as much as we do!
Homies is a cut throat card game to play with your best friends! You and your Homies are competing to see who can build the best homes with the most amazing furnishings. When the game ends, the player with the highest score wins. There are two types of game play: Standard and Collector Edition.
Homies includes 130 completely unique cards. Get land - build a home - furnish it - hang out with your Homies! But watch out, you opponents can destroy your home, steal your furnishings, or perform other actions to get ahead.
Homies is simple to learn but takes tons of strategy to win!
Homies is a game for 2-4 players and takes about 15 minutes to play per round. There are two types of game play: Standard and Collector Edition (see more on Collector Edition that requires the bonus Homie cards below).
There are several types of cards:
Homie Cards: You team up with these three Homies during your game. To start, each player picks three standard Homie Cards. To end the game, all three of your Homies must move into completed homes with at least three furnishings. For Standard Edition, each Homie has a preference for a type of home. If your Homie moves into their preferred home, you get extra points.
Land Cards: These cards start your home and have different values. City, County, and Waterfront land cards are worth between 1 to 3 points.
Home Cards: Build your home on top of a matching land card. City, County, and Waterfront home cards are worth between 1 to 3 points.
Furnishings: After you complete a land + home set, you furnish your home. Each furnishing is worth between 1 to 3 points.
Action Cards: Watch out! These cards change the game play and ratchet up the level of strategy! Throw a House Party for extra points, Dumpster Dive to retrieve a valuable card, Destroy a Home of any opponent, Steal a Furnishing from another player, Pick 3 cards, Swap Hands with any player, and more!
Start the game by separating out the twelve Homie Cards. Put them face down on the table and each player chooses three. Every Homie prefers living in a specific type of home, providing bonus points if they move into that type of home.
Game play ends when all three of a player's Homies are moved into homes. The player with the most points wins!
After picking your three Homies, shuffle the deck (without the remaining Homie Cards) and each player gets dealt seven cards.
On each turn, a player picks two cards from the Draw Pile and plays three cards. The pick two and play three gameplay keeps things moving quickly and makes the level of strategy required to win more challenging!
To start a home, first play a Land Card (either a City, Country or Waterfront). Then play another Land Card or build on existing land with a matching Home Card. Note the type of cards need to match (City Land matched with City Home, Country Land matched to Country Home, and so on). After a Land + Home set is complete you can start adding Furnishings. You may add as many furnishing as you want to a Home. Remember you may play up to three cards per turn.
Once a Home has three Furnishings, you can continue on adding Furnishings and gaining points before one of your Homies can move in. But be careful - if your Homie does not move in to in time your opponent can use an Action card to Steal Furnishings or Destroy Your Home.
Action Cards change the game and enable you to mess with your player's progress or gain a strategic advantage. For example, throwing a House Party in a home you have already moved into gains +5 points.
EXAMPLES OF ACTION CARDS
Destroying another player's home (before their Homie moves in) can really set them back. Also, watch out for Swap Hands (trade cards with any player), Dumpster Dive (pick any card from the discard pile), and other Actions.
To end the game, move all three of your Homies into furnished homes.
Get the highest score by adding up the numbers of your played cards and win!
Collector Edition (with Bonus Homie Cards)
Collectors Edition introduces new and powerful Homies to the gameplay. You can either pick from the new Homies to start a game OR each player keeps their own Homies to play during a game. During Collector's Edition, you can play your most powerful Homies but beware -- the winner gets to choose to swap one of their Homie cards with yours as their prize! Collectors Edition introduces a new level of complexity, since these Homies have superpowers that are unique to them. For example, after they move into a home -- some Homies enable a player to pick more cards, gain more points, block actions, and other actions.
What is a Homie?
HOMIE (definition): A term to highlight the highest form of respect. Best friends for life, yes but its more than that, a Homie is like family. Loyalty, trustworthiness, acceptance - this person has it all.
